The Turkish Embassy would like to inform the Maltese public that Turkey is dealing with the consequences of the foiled coup attempt of 15 July. In this connection, international reports claiming that there is an ongoing purge in Turkey is baseless. Here are the facts:
The developments unfolded in Turkey was a coup attempt be a group of plotters in the military, linked to the Fethullah Gülen Terrorist Organisation (FETO), to overthrow the democratically-elected government and the constitutional order in Turkey. Following the democratic resolve of our state and people, the coup attempt failed and democracy has prevailed. The government is in full charge. FETO which staged this coup attempt has undercover networks not only in the army but also in several state organisations. Those suspected to be part of this terrorist organization will be duly investigated and prosecuted if necessary. Along with the ongoing ones initiated in respect of FETO, required measures are now being taken against those involved in the coup attempt, so that those responsible are brought before justice swiftly. The validity of charges, if any, and the eventual sentences they would face, will be determined by the Turkish courts. There should be no doubt that the process will be conducted as usual in full respect to fundamental rights and freedoms and the rule of law, as prescribed by law. All judicial remedies are available.
Turkey is among the founding members of the Council of Europe which sets the highest universal standards in respect of human rights, the rule of law and democracy. Turkish judicial system functions in full observance of. Inter alia, its obligations deriving from the UN human rights conventions, European Convention of Human Rights and its Court.
